MEADVILLE, Pa. -- Allegheny's men's basketball team was defeated 79-62 by Penn State Behrend on Wednesday (Nov. 17) in a nonconference matchup and fell to 2-1 on the season.
The Gators were limited to 3-of-21 on three-point attempts and played most of the game within the post. Overall, Allegheny outscored Behrend 22-20 in the paint.
Conversely, the Lions went 8-for-11 from downtown in the first half, widening the gap between the two teams. Behrend left the first 20 minutes of play with a 47-28 lead.
However, Allegheny's defense improved as the game continued. The Gators held Behrend to 48.1 percent from the field and 23.1 percent from the perimeter. Additionally, because Allegheny garnered the double bonus, they capitalized on free-throw attempts. These factors led the Gators to outscore the Lions 34-32 in the second half.
Allegheny's second-half rally was sparked by
Jordan Greynolds (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton) who collected 12 points and a team-leading nine rebounds in the game, and
Caden Hinckley (Boise, Idaho/Mount Lebanon (Pa.) who also had a team-high 12 points. Other double-digit scorers included
Brian Roberts, Jr. (Copley, Ohio./Copley) and
Luke Barker (New Castle, Pa./Struthers (Ohio)) who each drained 11 points.
Defensively, Hinckley paced the team with two steals, while Greynolds and
Mike Noonan (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) each issued a block.
The Gators will remain home on Saturday, Nov. 20, hosting Carnegie Mellon at 3 p.m. at Mullen Arena. On that day, Allegheny will recognize former head coach of men's basketball and men's golf, and former athletic director Norm Sundstrom and the teams he coached.
