HOUGHTON, N.Y. — The Allegheny field hockey team concluded non-conference play Thursday (Oct. 21) at Houghton, coming home with a 3-0 victory.
The win improves the Gators' record to 7-7 on the season, and marked their fifth shutout overall and second in a row.
The Gators started out strong, finding the back of the net twice in the opening quarter.
Ella O'Connor (Haddon Township, N.J./Haddon Township) struck first, scoring 10 minutes in on a penalty corner inserted by
Jenna Cassani (Belgrade, Maine/Messalonskee). Allegheny earned another penalty corner as time was expiring in the quarter. This time,
Emily Eichner (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) scored the goal off a pass from
Becca Winton (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) to make it 2-0.
The score remained 2-0 until midway through the third quarter when
Kinsley Greenlaw (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) scored the Gators' third goal off the rebound of an O'Connor shot. The Allegheny defense was able to hold strong the rest of the way as they sealed the win.
The Gators held an edge in shots (12-8) and penalty corners (8-6).
Hallie Reiger (Oklahoma City, Okla./Casady) made six saves, earning the win in net.
Meredythe Baird (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Holy Redeemer) stepped into the net for the fourth quarter to preserve the shutout.
Allegheny returns to NCAC play with a 1 pm match at Wittenberg on Saturday, Oct. 23.
