HIRAM, Ohio -- A penalty kick call a mere 20 seconds after the Gators tied the game late gave Hiram a 3-2 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) victory on Tuesday night (Oct. 19).
Trailing, 2-1,
Anthony Melograne (Pittsburgh, Pa./Peters Township) buried the game-tying goal to the lower-left 90 to knot the game at 85:14. However, it didn't take long for Hiram to play the ball ahead after the kickoff and once inside the box, the PK was awarded. Unfortunately for the Gators,
Jack Barron-Sluga (Guelph, Ont./Appleby College) was unable to turn away the try and the homesteading Terriers escaped with the victory.
Allegheny struck first when
Nicholas Taliani (Cheswick, Pa./Springdale) opened the scoring in the 28th minute, but a Hiram goal with 5:24 to play in the first half squared the match at 1-1 at halftime, and the go-ahead score came in the 58th minute.
Taliani led all players with five shots, while Melograne totaled four.
Henry Rosenberg (Pittsburgh, Pa./Allderdice) and
Brady Napoleon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) each got off a pair of shots.
Barron-Sluga made three saves while manning the goal box for full time.
Allegheny will travel to DePauw for its final road NCAC conference match on Saturday, Oct. 23. Kickoff in Greencastle, Ind. is set for 2:30 p.m.
