Allegheny shutouts Oberlin in first 2021 NCAC victory

By Adam Cohen, Athletic Communications Assistant

OBERLIN, Ohio -- The Allegheny field hockey team shutout Oberlin 4-0 on Tuesday (Oct. 19) for its first North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) win since Oct. 23, 2019, also against Oberlin. The win moves the Gators to 6-7, 1-4 NCAC.

Allegheny scored its first two goals in the second quarter. Bella Cowen (Louisville, Ky./Kentucky Day School) drove in the first goal of the game, which was assisted by Kelsey Anderson (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton). Kelsey's twin sister, Emma Anderson (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton), later scored in a penalty stroke goal to give the Gators a 2-0 lead to close out the half.

In the final 15 minutes of play, Allegheny brought in two more goals. Ramsay Smith (Williamsburg, Va./Lafayette) scored a goal in the 55th minute of play, which was assisted by Maya Francisco (Toledo, Ohio./Maumee Valley Country Day School). Four minutes later, Kinsley Greenlaw's (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) shot went into the net, and Cowen continued her impressive game by aiding Greenlaw with the assist.

Defensively, the Gators prevented Oberlin from producing a single shot on target as goalkeeper Meredythe Baird (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Holy Redeemer) spent all 60 minutes guarding the net.

Allegheny travels to Houghton, N.Y. to face off against Houghton in a nonconference matchup on Thursday, Oct. 21 at 7 p.m.
