MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Allegheny women's basketball team took No. 4 DePauw to overtime before falling to the Tigers by a 73-69 margin at James H. Mullen, Jr. Arena.
After trailing by seven, 34-27, at halftime, the Gators battled back to knot the game through three periods with a 19-12 advantage in the third quarter. A back-and-forth fourth quarter ensued, with
Julianna Skowron (Sewickley, Pa./Oakland Catholic) forcing a tie at 58-58 with less than two minutes to play, which proved to be the final points of regulation. Each team missed a three-pointer down the stretch, with Allegheny's coming as time expired after forcing a shot-clock violation defensively with 15 seconds remaining.
Allegheny never led in overtime, but matched DePauw scores four times, including the final at 66-66 with under a minute to play thanks to a pair of free throws by
Alexis Caldwell (Whitefish Bay, Wis./Whitefish Bay). A late layup by
Rylee Donovan (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) sliced a four-point deficit in half, but the Tigers converted a pair of free throws to seal the four-point victory.
Skowron led four Gators in double figures with 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting, while Donovan and
Zoe Youdell (Connellsville, Pa./Connellsville) both scored 17 points. Youdell also finished 8-of-12 from the floor, while Donovan added eight assists and six boards. Caldwell recorded her second career double-double, posting 12 points and 10 rebounds.
The Gators will have a quick turnaround when they host Wittenberg at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 8. Prior to the game, the Allegheny Department of Athletics will host a sports clinic for National Girls & Women in Sports Day, which was celebrated across the country earlier this week. That event will begin at 1:30 p.m. at the David V. Wise Center on campus.
