Rylee Donovan's (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) three-pointer at the buzzer ricocheted off the rim as the Allegheny women's basketball team came up just short at home against Kenyon, 74-73, on Saturday (Jan. 10).
Trailing by eight at the end of the third, the Gators went on a 21-12 run in the fourth quarter to take a 73-72 lead with 15 seconds remaining in regulation. An Allegheny foul at two seconds left in the game sent Kenyon to the line where it converted both free throws and took a 74-73 lead which would prove to be the final.
Zoe Youdell (Connellsville, Pa./Connellsville) led all players with a season-best 25 points on 10-of-18 from the floor and 5-for-5 at the free-throw line. Donovan was right behind with 23 points, plus seven boards and six assists.
Julianna Skowron (Sewickley, Pa./Oakland Catholic) joined the duo in double figures at 14 points, in addition to seven rebounds.
Alexis Caldwell (Whitefish Bay, Wis./Whitefish Bay) led the Gators with eight rebounds, while also adding two assists.
The Gators held the advantage in shot percentage, converting on 45.5% of their attempts, while holding the Ladies to 37.8 percent. Allegheny also controlled the paint with 50 of its points coming from the lane, compared to 34 for Kenyon.
Allegheny moves to 6-8 overall this year and 2-3 in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC). The Gators will hit the road for an 8 p.m. tip-off at Hiram on Wednesday, Jan. 15.
