ALLIANCE, Ohio – Two first-half goals helped the Allegheny women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Spalding (Ky.) in the 2019 season opener.
Â
Allegheny scored just five minutes into the contest as
Taylor Renk (Cranberry Township, Pa./Oakland Catholic) found the back of the net, unassisted.
Shannon McGuinn (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent) then doubled the Gators lead with an unassisted goal of her own in the 42nd minute.
Â
Spalding cut into that lead a minute and a half later with a goal by Shelby Deering, but the Allegheny defense responded by allowing only one shot in the second half to spur them on to the 2-1 victory.
Â
The Gators dominated offensively with 21 shots, nine on goal, compared to six shots, two on goal, for the Golden Eagles.
Â
Renk led all players with seven shots and three on-goal, followed by
Blair Proteau (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) with three, and a trio of Gators with two.
Â
Allegheny is back in action on Sunday, September 1, as it play tournament host Mount Union in a nonconference match slated for 4:00 P.M.
