DALLAS, Pa. -- Three major milestones mark the path to the first field hockey game in Allegheny College history, with the final one taking place Friday evening, August 30, when the Gators competed in the program's opening match against Gwynedd Mercy at Misericordia.
The first key date was October 27, 2017 when the College announced the formation of the program for the 2019 season, and the second came just under two months later, on December 21, 2017, when
Valerie Lohr was introduced as the first head coach.
When all was said and done on Friday evening, the scoreboard read Gwynedd Mercy 7, Allegheny 0, but when the Gators took the field, it was more about the culmination of nearly two years worth of preparation finally coming to fruition.
Freshman
Hallie Reiger (Oklahoma City, Okla./Casady) earned the start in goal and made six saves in her 30 minutes split between the first and third quarters. Classmate
Heather Amancio (San Diego, Calif./Patrick Henry) spent the second and fourth quarters between the pipes and turned in three saves. Junior
Kierstin Faw (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge) added a defensive save late when she deflected a shot up and into the crossbar to keep the Griffins off the board.
The Gators will be back in action tomorrow, Saturday, August 31, when they take on host Misericordia at 1 p.m. Fans can watch the live stream
