CHILLICOTHE, Ohio --
Joe Nagel (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy) gave the Gators 6.1 strong innings to help Allegheny stave off elimination with a 4-1 win over Wabash in the fourth game of the 2019 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Tournament.
The victory was the first for the Gators at the league's championship event since a 6-5 come-from-behind win over Oberlin on Friday, May 10, 2013. Allegheny (22-16) advances to earn a rematch with second-seeded Denison at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 10. The Big Red topped the Gators, 5-4, in the first game for both teams of the tournament earlier Thursday.
Nagel was strong, matching his career high with 105 pitches through those 6.1 innings and working into the seventh inning for the first time since April 13 against Ohio Wesleyan (8.0 IP). The senior improved to 5-3 on the year after allowing three hits and just one run while striking out five and walking four.
Nick Tarasi (Gibsonia, Pa./Shady Side Academy) struck out three, walked one and gave up just one hit in 1.2 innings of relief, while
Dalton Donachie (New Springfield, Ohio/Springfield Local) picked up his sixth save of the campaign by tossing a scoreless, hitless ninth in which he struck out a pair.
Austin Bristol (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) tripled to lead off the bottom of the first inning and scored on a wild pitch to plate the first run of the game. The senior (who drew a one-out walk and stole second) then scored the second run of the game in the third inning when he came in on an RBI hustle double by
Luke Chutko (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills), 2-0. Wabash got on the board with a run in the top of the seventh, but the Gators tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth by virtue of a two-run single by
Ethan Pawlak (Chardon, Ohio/Gilmour Academy) that scored pinch-runner
Jacob Budnar (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Cleveland Heights) and
Tommy Cannon (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory).
Bret Kelly (Tonawanda, N.Y./Tonawanda) had two of Allegheny's six hits, while Chutko walked twice in addition to his RBI double.
