GRANVILLE, Ohio -- Allegheny led by two heading into the bottom of the ninth, but No. 23 Denison rallied for three runs to win the second game of a doubleheader, 8-7, after posting a 9-1 win over the Gators in game one.
Allegheny falls to an even 10-10 at the halfway point of the 2019 baseball season and drops to 2-3 in North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) play. The Big Red are now 21-2 overall and 6-0 in the NCAC.
Trailing, 5-3, entering the eighth inning, Allegheny rallied for three runs in the top of the eighth inning to take a 6-5 lead. With two on and one out,
Ben Kosbie (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) ripped a single through the left side that scored
Luke Chutko (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills), 5-4.
Ethan Pawlak (Chardon, Ohio/Gilmour Academy) then reached on a fielder's choice that plated
Bret Kelly (Tonawanda, N.Y./Tonawanda) to tie the game, and an error allowed Pawlak to move up to second.
Dalton DuBois (Bemus Point, N.Y./Maple Grove) followed Pawlak with an RBI single to right to give the Gators the lead through seven-and-a-half innings.
In the bottom of the eighth,
Dalton Donachie (New Springfield, Ohio/Springfield Local) retired Denison 1-2-3, which set up the Gators to add an insurance run in the top of the ninth when an RBI single by Chutko drove home
Austin Bristol (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park). The Big Red scored three times in the bottom of the ninth to earn the victory.
Donachie took the loss, his first of the season, after allowing four runs (just one earned) in 4.0-plus innings of relief in which he allowed just three hits and two walks, and struck out four.
Jarod Deagan (Copley, Ohio/Copley) struck out the only batter he faced, with one out in the ninth.
Kosbie and DuBois both had three hits in the night cap, with DuBois adding a double and driving in two and Kosbie plating one. Bristol, Chutko and Kelly each accounted for two of Allegheny's 14 hits.
In the first game, Allegheny's lone run came on a fourth-inning sacrifice fly by Chutko that drove in
Brett Heckert (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny). In the opener,
Keegan Phillips (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) was the only Gator to record two hits, reaching base three times as he was hit by a pitch as well.
Sean Kealey (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) took the loss to fall to 3-3. He gave up seven hits and six runs in 4.0 innings.
Allegheny will travel to Penn State Behrend for a 4 p.m. nonconference game on Monday, April 8.
