Wittenberg Slips Past Gators, 5-4

MEADVILLE, Pa.— The Allegheny College men's tennis team fell in their North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) opener at home against Wittenberg University Friday (April 5).

The Tigers won the match 5-4.

Cooper Miller (Falconer, N.Y./Falconer Central) and Mackenzie Knowlton (Toronto, Ont./Niagara Academy of Tennis) were first off the court at third doubles as they prevailed in a quick 8-1 match.

After Wittenberg took a close 8-6 match at first doubles, the Gator second doubles team put Allegheny back in front, 2-1.  Colton Johnson Taylor (Apple Valley, Minn./Apple Valley) and Zach Anderson Belle Mead, N.J./Montgomery) picked up that win 8-5.

The Tigers gained momentum in the singles matches as they won the first three flights to move within a point of taking the match.

At fourth singles, Zach Anderson battled against Timothy McNulty.  Anderson took the first set 6-4, but fell in the second set 6-3, setting up a tiebreaker.  The tiebreaker went back-and-forth, as the players found themselves tied at 10 points apiece.  McNulty, though, tallied the final two points to pick up the win and clinch the match for the Tigers.

Miller and Knowlton closed out the match with their second wins of the day.  At fifth singles, Miller picked up a 6-1, 6-0 win, while Knowlton won at sixth singles 6-2, 6-2.

The Gators return to action Saturday (April 6) for a home non-conference match against Franciscan University.
