Women's Lacrosse pulls away from Fredonia late, 17-10

MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Gators pulled away from a one-goal game midway through the second half to post a 17-10 win over Fredonia (N.Y.) in the final nonconference and home action of the 2019 season.

The victory moves the Allegheny women's lacrosse team to 5-11 on the season, while Fredonia drops to 4-12.

With the home team leading 11-10 in the second half, Taylor Vigneri (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua Academy) scored the first of six unanswered goals to close play at the 12:52 mark off an assist by Sarah Basden (Malibu, Calif./Thousand Oaks). Brenna Lawler (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) scored an unassisted goal at 10:41 to give the Gators breathing room before Devin Gaffney (Rochester, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) scored back-to-back goals to blow the game open. Alex Zielinski (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and Vigneri closed the scoring in the game.

Allegheny led 8-5 at halftime behind hat tricks by Lawler and Evi Malagise (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk).

Lawler and Malagise tied for the game high with four goals apiece, while Vigneri recorded her second hat trick of the season at three tallies. Mary Allen (Victor, N.Y./Victor) added four points on two goals and two assists.

Goalie Steph Shakespeare (Pittsburgh, Pa./Peters Township) led all players with seven ground balls and made eight saves in picking up her fifth win of 2019. Zielinski (three), Lawler (two) and Gretchen Barbera (Yarmouth, Maine/Yarmouth) (two) each scooped multiple ground balls. Barbera posted a game-high eight draw controls, with Zielinski adding five. Vigneri forced four turnovers and Barbera and Shakespeare each added two.

The Gators will close out North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) play at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 25 when they travel to Hiram.
