MEADVILLE, Pa. --
Sean Kealey (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) held No. 11 Wooster to its lowest hit total of the season (two) as the Allegheny baseball team took the opening game of a North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) doubleheader by a 6-1 score.
The Fighting Scots battled back to take the second game, 16-0, in seven innings. With the split, the Gators move to 16-13 overall and 6-5 in the NCAC after handing Wooster (18-8, 9-1) its first conference loss in 2019.
Kealey was magnificent, not allowing a Wooster runner to reach third until there was one out in the seventh inning, which led to the Scots' only run. He faced just three hitters in four of his seven innings, tossing 114 pitches in the process and surrendering just two hits and one run. The 6-7 lefty struck out five and walked four en route to improving to 4-3 on the season.
Dalton Donachie (New Springfield, Ohio/Springfield Local) worked the final 2.0 innings of hitless baseball, striking out three and walking two.
Allegheny opened the scoring with four runs in the bottom of the third.
Bret Kelly (Tonawanda, N.Y./Tonawanda) led off with a single as the first Gator to reach base and then was safe at second when
Max Sessions (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) reached on a fielder's choice and the throw to try to get Kelly at second sailed into right field. Both runners moved up on a sacrifice bunt by
Vincent Carone (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and came in to score on a two-run single up the middle by
Austin Bristol (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park).
Brandon Pouch (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny) singled to put two on and
Tommy Cannon (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) and
Keegan Phillips (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) delivered RBI base knocks to stretch the lead to 4-0.
The Gators added another run in the sixth when
Luke Chutko (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) doubled with two outs and came in to score on Kelly's RBI single, 5-0. Kelly added his second RBI hit of the game in the eighth to bring in
Ethan Pawlak (Chardon, Ohio/Gilmour Academy), who walked to open the frame and went from first to third on a sacrifice bunt by Phillips, 6-1.
Kelly had his 10th multi-hit game of the year, and third three-hit game, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run. Bristol drove in two in going 1-for-4 with a run, while Chutko had the lone extra-base hit in the game.
Joe Nagel (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy) took the loss in game two to fall to 4-2 this year. He yielded six runs on seven hits in 2.0 innings, with three strikeouts and two walks. He was one of five Gator pitchers on the day.
Nolan Thompson (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) was the only Allegheny pitcher to not allow an earned run, but gave up three runs and struck out two in 2.0 innings.
The offense was held without a hit by Wooster's Andrew Hill, who improved to 3-0 in the night cap.
Allegheny will step out of conference play on Tuesday for a single nine-inning game against Thiel at 3 p.m. at the Robertson Athletic Complex.
