MEADVILLE, Pa. -- Allegheny scored four runs in the bottom of the first and held off a late surge from Thiel as the Gators took a 6-4 nonconference decision against the Tomcats on Wednesday, April 24.
The Gators, winners of six of their last seven games, improve to 17-13 on the season, while the Tomcats, currently in the thick of the Presidents' Athletic Conference Tournament hunt, fall to 16-18 overall.
Allegheny put up its first four runs in the opening frame when
Keegan Phillips (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) and
Bret Kelly (Tonawanda, N.Y./Tonawanda) sandwiched RBI singles around a two-run double by
Dalton DuBois (Bemus Point, N.Y./Maple Grove).
Phillips drove in the Gators' fifth run with an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth that scored
Ethan Pawlak (Chardon, Ohio/Gilmour Academy) from second, 5-0. The final run for the home team came in the next inning as
Vincent Carone (Erie, Pa./McDowell) scored from third on a wild pitch on the fourth ball to
Tommy Cannon (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory), 6-0.
Thiel did not get on the board until starter
Jarod Deagan (Copley, Ohio/Copley) left the game after going 6.0 innings, with five hits and no runs allowed and three strikeouts plus a walk. He earned the victory to improve to 3-2 on the season.
Dalton Donachie (New Springfield, Ohio/Springfield Local) entered with runners on second and third with no outs in the eighth inning of a 6-4 game and slammed the door by retiring all six batters he faced, including two by strikeout, to pick up his third save of the season.
Bristol finished the game 3-for-4 with a walk and run, marking his 11th multi-hit game of the season and the fifth with at least three hits. Phillips and Kelly both had two hits, while Phillips and DuBois each drove in two runs. Cannon was walked in four of his five plate appearances. Allegheny held off the late surge despite leaving 14 runners on base in the contest.
The Gators will honor their eight seniors before Saturday's North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) doubleheader against Wittenberg which begins at noon on Saturday, April 27 at the Robertson Athletic Complex.
