Late Surge Pushes Wittenberg Past Gators

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio—The Allegheny College women's lacrosse team fell in North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) road action Saturday (April 20) at Wittenberg University, 19-13.
 
The Tigers scored the first three goals of the game before the Gators got on the scoreboard.  After two goals apiece, Wittenberg pushed their lead to 7-3.  The Gators put together a 4-0 run to tie the game at seven, but a pair of Wittenberg goals gave them a 9-7 halftime lead. 
 
Wittenberg maintained their lead early in the second half before two straight Gator goals brought the game within a goal at 12-11.  The teams continued to trade goals back-and-forth before the Tigers ended the game on a 4-0 run.
 
Alex Zielinski (Erie, Pa./McDowell) led the way for the Gator offense, producing six points on four goals and two assists.  Evi Malagise (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) and Brenna Lawler (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) had five points apiece.  Malagise had three goals, two assists while Lawler had four goals and an assist. Mary Allen (Victor, N.Y./Victor) had a pair of goals and an assist while Sarah Basden (Malibu, Calif./Thousand Oaks) had two assists.
 
Gretchen Barbera (Yarmouth, Maine/Yarmouth) led the defenders with five groundballs and two caused turnovers.  She also won 10 draw controls.  Gabriella Eberle (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence) and Laurence Busque (Litiz, Pa./Manheim Twp.) had three groundballs apiece. 
 
Steph Shakespeare (Pittsburgh, Pa./Peters Township) made 12 saves in net.
 
With the loss, the Gators fall to 4-11 overall and 1-6 in NCAC play while Wittenberg improved to 7-8 overall and 3-4 in NCAC play.
 
The Gators are back in Meadville for the final time this season Tuesday (April 23) when they host Fredonia State.
