Karnik goes the distance to carry Gators past Redhawks, 8-2

MEADVILLE, Pa. -- Cam Karnik (Lorain, Ohio/Amherst Steele) threw a complete game and allowed just two runs, and the Gators gave him seven runs of support in the second inning en route to an 8-2 nonconference home win over La Roche.

With the victory, the Allegheny baseball team moves to 15-12 overall this season behind a four-game winning streak. La Roche, co-leaders of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC), drops to 17-10 overall.

Karnik entered the game with six relief appearances totaling 7.2 innings. On Thursday, he threw 9.0 innings and scattered 11 hits on 124 pitches. The freshman earned his first win by surrendering just a pair of runs and striking out six, while walking two and hitting a batter. On a windy day at Robertson, Karnik got 11 outs in the air and 10 on the ground.

The rookie settled down after giving up back-to-back singles to open the game and walking another batter to load the bases with two outs before hitting a Redhawk to give the visitors a 1-0 lead in the first. He got the next batter to strike out to end the inning. In the second, La Roche had runners on second and third with one out, but a grounder to Vincent Carone (Erie, Pa./McDowell) led to an out at home plate and Karnik got out of the inning unscathed, holding the margin at 1-0.

He was rewarded in the bottom of the inning as Allegheny put up seven runs with two outs. Singles by Brandon Pouch (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny) and Bret Kelly (Tonawanda, N.Y./Tonawanda) put two Gators on before Carone walked to load the bases. Austin Bristol (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) gave Allegheny the lead with a two-run single, and an infield base knock by Ben Kosbie (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) once again loaded the bases. Tommy Cannon (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) drew a bases-loaded walk, which was followed by a bases-clearing triple from Ethan Pawlak (Chardon, Ohio/Gilmour Academy), 6-1. Luke Chutko (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) capped the scoring by driving in Pawlak with a single and making it 7-1.

Allegheny added an insurance run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Kelly, while La Roche scored once in the ninth to set the final margin at 8-2.

Kosbie had three hits for the second time this season, his third multi-hit game, while Pawlak and Chutko both collected two hits.

The Gators are set to return to North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) play with a noon doubleheader against No. 11 Wooster on Saturday, April 20.
