MEADVILLE, Pa.— The Allegheny College women's lacrosse team was unable to overcome a fast start by the College of Wooster as they fell 21-5 in North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) play Tuesday (April 16).
The Fighting Scots got out to a quick advantage, scoring the opening eight goals in a 12 minute span.
Evi Malagise (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) got the Gators on the board with a free-position goal. After Wooster scored three more goals,
Mary Allen (Victor, N.Y./Victor) scored on her own free-position to cut the lead to 11-2. Malagise and
Sarah Basden (Malibu, Calif./Thousand Oaks) scored back-to-back goals to answer a Wooster score, but the Fighting Scots added a late goal to take a 13-4 lead into the half.
In the second half, the Fighting Scots outscored the Gators 8-1 to seal the conference win.
Malagise and Allen scored two goals apiece to lead the Gators. Basden added a goal while
Alex Zielinski (Erie, Pa./McDowell) had an assist.
Gretchen Barbera (Yarmouth, Maine/Yarmouth) led the Gator defensive effort with five groundballs and two caused turnovers. She also had a team-high seven draw controls.
Laurence Busque (Litiz, Pa./Manheim Twp.) had two caused turnovers and three groundballs, while Allen also caused two turnovers. In net,
Steph Shakespeare (Pittsburgh, Pa./Peters Township) made seven stops.
With the loss, the Gators fall to 4-10 overall and 1-5 in NCAC play, while the Fighting Scots improve to 12-1 overall and 4-1 in NCAC play.
The Gators return to action Saturday (April 20) for a road NCAC contest at Wittenberg University.
