Gators earn sweep at Hiram, 7-4 and 9-3

HIRAM, Ohio -- The Allegheny baseball team moved its North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) record above .500 with a sweep at Hiram by scores of 7-4 and 9-2.

The Gators now stand at 14-12 overall this year with a 5-4 mark in conference action.

In game one, the Gators jumped out to a 5-0 lead through three innings. Keegan Phillips (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) scored after stealing third and coming home on a throwing error in the first and then Bret Kelly (Tonawanda, N.Y./Tonawanda) connected on his first collegiate home run, a two-run shot to left field in the top of the second. The third inning saw Dalton DuBois (Bemus Point, N.Y./Maple Grove) deliver a two-run double to left to make it 5-0.

After the Terriers got on the board with a solo homer in the bottom of the fourth, Allegheny plated the next two runs on an RBI single by DuBois in the fifth and an RBI double by Ethan Pawlak (Chardon, Ohio/Gilmour Academy) in the seventh.

Jarod Deagan (Copley, Ohio/Copley) earned the win to improve to 2-2 on the season as he went 6.2 innings and yielded seven hits and three runs (two earned), while striking out five and walking none. Nolan Thompson (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) worked 1.2 innings and gave up two hits and a run. Nick Tarasi (Gibsonia, Pa./Shady Side Academy) earned his first career save, entering with one out and the bases loaded in the ninth inning and getting a line out and ground ball to slam the door.

The second game saw an offensive stalemate through the first four innings until Pawlak started the scoring with an RBI double in the top of the fifth, 1-0. Hiram got on the scoreboard with a run in the sixth, but Luke Chutko (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) gave Allegheny the lead back for good in the seventh with an RBI single and the Blue & Gold broke it open in the eighth on a three-run homer by Tommy Cannon (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory), 5-1.

Hiram added a run in the bottom of the eighth, but the Gators pushed across four runs in the ninth on an RBI double by Vincent Carone (Erie, Pa./McDowell), sacrifice flies by Austin Bristol (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) and Phillips and an RBI single by Pawlak.

Cannon had two hits, including his homer, and three RBI. Bristol finished 3-for-4, while Brandon Pouch (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny) and Pawlak each had two hits, including a double.

Dalton Donachie (New Springfield, Pa./Springfield Local) improved to 3-1 by making his first start of the season and going 7.1 innings of four-hit baseball with four strikeouts and two earned runs allowed. Nate Pastorek (Sarver, Pa./Freeport) earned his first save of the season and third of his career with 1.2 innings of relief and four strikeouts.

Allegheny hosts Wooster in an NCAC doubleheader at the Robertson Athletic Complex at noon on Saturday, April 20.
