Zielinski Nets Five, but Gators Fall on Senior Day to OWU

MEADVILLE, Pa.—The Allegheny College women's lacrosse team had their senior day spoiled by Ohio Wesleyan University, 9-7, Saturday (April 13) in North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) play.

Before the game, the Gators honored their five senior players: Sarah Basden (Malibu, Calif./Thousand Oaks), Taylor Vigneri (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua Academy), Alex Zielinski (Erie, Pa./McDowell), Laurence Busque (Litiz, Pa./Manheim Twp.) and Alex Grob (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton).

The Gators jumped out to a 2-1 lead early on off a pair of goals by Zielinski.  However, the Battling Bishops did not allow another goal the rest of the first half, while scoring five, to take a 6-2 lead at the half.

Zielinski started the second half with a goal less than a minute in, off an assist from Evi Malagise (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk).  Vigneri then found the back of the net to cut the lead to 6-4.  A pair of Battling Bishops goals made it a four goal game, but the Gators scored the next two goals.  Zielinski scored the first goal off a feed from Basden, while Brenna Lawler (Randolph, N.J/Randolph) scored the second off an assist from Rhiannon King (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan).  After another Ohio Wesleyan goal, Zielinski scored in the final 30 seconds, but it was not enough to overcome the lead.

Zielinski finished the game with five points, while Lawler had a goal and an assist.  Malagise, Vigneri and Gretchen Barbera (Yarmouth, Maine/Yarmouth) had four groundballs apiece.  Barbera also led the Gators with four caused turnovers, while Mary Allen (Victor, N.Y./Victor) caused three.  Grob caused two.  In net, Steph Shakespeare (Pittsburgh, Pa./Peters Township) made nine saves.

The Gators are back at home Tuesday (April 16) against the College of Wooster.
