MEADVILLE, Pa. --
Bret Kelly (Tonawanda, N.Y./Tonawanda) delivered a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the eighth to give Allegheny a 5-4 win in the nightcap and a North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) doubleheader split against Ohio Wesleyan.
With the split, Allegheny moved to 12-12 overall and 3-4 in the NCAC. OWU is now 10-15 this season and 3-5 in conference play. The Battling Bishops took game one of the day by a 7-4 score.
Kelly stepped to the plate with two runs already in in the eighth and Allegheny trailing, 5-3, after
Ethan Pawlak (Chardon, Ohio/Gilmour Academy) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and
Dalton DuBois (Bemus Point, N.Y./Maple Grove) drew a bases-loaded walk. Pawlak and
Tommy Cannon (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) scored on Kelly's base knock.
The runs allowed
Joe Nagel (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy), who went eight innings, to pick up his fourth win of the season and improve to 4-1. The senior needed just 97 pitches to get through eight innings and scattered seven hits and four runs (one earned). Nagel struck out one and walked two and got 12 outs on the ground and seven in the air.
Dalton Donachie (New Springfield, Ohio/Springfield Local) closed out the game with a 1-2-3 ninth inning with two strikeouts to pick up his second save of the season.
Vincent Carone (Erie, Pa./McDowell) had two of the Gators' five hits in the second game.
The Gators initially battled back to tie game one at 4-4 with four runs in the eighth inning thanks to a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch to
Keegan Phillips (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) (who also had two hits), a two-run double by Kelly and a pinch-hit infield single by
Francis Faiello (Pittsburgh, Pa./Kiski School).
OWU responded with a three spot in the top of the ninth inning off of reliever
Jarod Deagan (Copley, Ohio/Copley), who suffered the loss to drop to 1-2.
Sean Kealey (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) received a no-decision despite striking out a career-best 10 Bishops for the second-straight season. Kealey worked the first 7.0 innings and allowed six hits and four runs (three earned).
Ben Kosbie (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) tripled in the defeat, one of eight Gators with at a hit in the game.
Allegheny will travel to Hiram for an NCAC double dip at noon on Tuesday, April 16.
