Geneva Takes Two From Gators

BEAVER FALLS, Pa.— The Allegheny College softball team dropped a pair of non-conference games to Geneva College Wednesday (March 27).
 
Geneva won game one 5-0 and game two 6-3.
 
Game One – Geneva 5, Allegheny 0
 
Samantha Valera hit a two-out double in the top of the first, but the Gators were unable to take advantage of it.  In the bottom of the frame, Hayley Saintao led-off with a single for the Golden Tornadoes.  She eventually came around after a pair of stolen bases and an error for the game's first game.  Geneva added to the lead in the bottom of the second.  Madison Schultz singled to start the inning.  After a walk and a sac bunt by the Golden Tornadoes, a wild pitch brought her home to make it 2-0.
 
In the top of the fourth, Hayley Behr singled to left center, but was left on base heading into the bottom of the frame. 
 
Geneva added two runs in the bottom of the fourth.  Saintao scored her second run of the game.  Ericka Hess also scored after a walk to leadoff the inning. 
 
The Gators threatened in the top of the sixth.  Kelly Lafferty led-off with a single to left center.  With one out, Valera had her second hit of the day.  However, the Golden Tornadoes got out of the inning unscathed. 
 
Geneva tacked on a fifth run in the bottom of the sixth.  A single by Sarah Johnson, followed up by a double, scored the run. 
 
Lindsey Crovak hit a two-out single in the seventh, but Geneva ended the inning on a groundout to seal the game one win.
 
Valera led the Gators with a pair of hits.  Lafferty, Behr and Crovak also registered hits. 
 
Game Two – Geneva 6, Allegheny 3
 
In the top of the first, Valera reached base via error.  Behr followed up with an infield single, the inning stalled out with two runners left on base.
 
The Gators got on the scoreboard in the top of the third.  Lafferty led-off with a single up the middle.  Paige Ziggas moved her over on a sac bunt.  Valera had her third hit of the day to take Lafferty to third.  With two outs, Kyleigh Cason hit a single to right field, scoring Lafferty and giving the Gators a 1-0 lead.
 
The lead was short lived, as the Golden Tornadoes added a run in the bottom of the third.  Two singles, a stolen base and a wild pitch brought Johnson home to tie the game.  In the bottom of the fourth, Geneva added to their lead.  On three hits, the Golden Tornadoes produced five runs to push their lead to 6-1.
 
Allegheny made up a run in the top of the sixth.  Cason led off with a single, followed up by a Jessica Valerino single.  Emily Cramer came into pinch hit, reaching on a fielder's choice.  With two runners on, Crovak hit an infield single to bring Cason home.  A Joplin Osgood single loaded the bases, but the Golden Tornadoes forced the next two batters out as they kept a 6-2 lead. 
 
In the top of the seventh, the Gators loaded the bases.  Behr was hit by a pitch, Cason reached on a fielder's choice and Valerino singled to center field.  Cramer grounded out, but it brought Behr home to cut the lead to 6-3.  However, the Golden Tornadoes recorded the final out to complete the sweep.
 
The Gator offense had 12 hits in the game.  Lafferty, Valera, Cason, Valerino and Crovak all had two apiece.  Cason, Corvak and Cramer brought the runs in, while Lafferty, Cason and Behr scored the runs.
 
The Gators are back in action Thursday (March 28) on the road against Thiel College.
