HILTON HEAD, S.C.—The Allegheny College women's tennis team fell in a tight battle against Stevenson University 5-4 Thursday (March 21).
The Mustangs won two-of-three doubles matches to start. The Gators win came at second doubles. Hannah Schaeffer and Svannah Gray faced Kirstyn Davidson and Megan Waskiewicz. The match was close, but the Gator duo were able to break Stevenson to take it 8-6/
Amanda Ress Liere picked up the first win during the singles matches. In the first singles match, Ress Liere collected a clean 6-0, 6-0 sweep against Jenna Skove.
Gray then tied the overall match at two with a win at third singles. Facing Waskiewicz, Gray won the opening set 6-2. Gray's momentum carried over to the second set where she won 6-1 to take the match.
Schaeffer also picked up her second win of the day in singles action. Going against Nina Bretz in the fourth slot, the first set went to a tiebreaker. Schaeffer was able to break Bretz in the tiebreaker, winning the extra session 8-6. In the second set, Scaheffer was able to break again to win 6-4 and put the Gators in front 3-2.
However, the Mustangs won the final two singles matches to win the match 5-4.
The Gators are back in action Friday (March 22) when they close their trip against SUNY Geneseo.
