TUCSON, Ariz. -- Junior
Keegan Phillips (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) went 4-for-4 and drove in seven runs in the first game as the Gators won 22-2, before dropping an 8-6 decision in the night cap against Grinnell (Iowa) at Kino Sports Complex.
Phillips had three, two-run singles and an RBI double in the opener, plus scored three runs and stole a pair of bags before going 2-for-4 with a run scored in game two. Over the last three games, Phillips is 9-for-11 with 10 RBI, two doubles and six runs.
In the first game, the Gators pounded out 23 hits as five others joined Phillips with multiple hits. Seniors
Brandon Pouch (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny) and
Tommy Cannon (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) each had three hits. Cannon had a double and also walked twice, drove in three runs and scored five. Two-hit performances were from senior
Austin Bristol (Orchard Park, N.Y/Orchard Park), sophomore
Luke Chutko (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) and junior
Bret Kelly (Tonawanda, N.Y./Tonawanda). Senior
Max Sessions (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) had a double and sacrifice fly en route to four RBI.
The 22 runs in the first half marked the second-straight game the Gators topped 20 runs (21 vs. Hamline on March 19) and were the most runs since Allegheny put up 23 in a 23-6 win at Pitt-Bradford on April 13, 2005.
Senior
Joe Nagel (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy) went the distance in game one, improving to 2-1 this season with seven hits and two runs with three strike outs and four walks in 105 pitches.
In game two, Allegheny tied the game at 2-2 in the third with a sac fly from Pouch and an RBI double by Chutko. The Blue & Gold got within 7-5 on a bases-clearing triple by freshman
Brett Heckert (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) (one of two triples in the game for Heckert) in the fourth and scratched across another run when Bristol drove in a run on a sac fly.
Junior
Nate Pastorek (Sarver, Pa./Freeport) suffered the loss to fall to 0-3. He seceded six runs on six hits, plus two walks and four strike outs in 3.1 innings.
Nick Tarasi (Gibsonia, Pa./Shady Side Academy) worked 3.1 innings with three hits and three walks, two runs and two strike outs.
Allegheny will wrap up the trip to Arizona with a 9 a.m. Mountain Standard Time (12 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time) game against Augsburg (Minn.) at Kino Sports Complex Field 8.
