WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Senior
Alex Zielinski (Erie, Pa./McDowell) recorded a career-high 12 points to tie the Allegheny single-game points record as the Gators defeated Washington & Jefferson, 19-9, in nonconference action on Saturday morning.
Zielinski posted career highs with seven goals and five assists to equal the single-game points record which was previously shared by
McKenzie Bell (April 27, 2013 vs. Ohio Wesleyan) and Jensen Paterson (March 15, 2011 vs. Medaille). The senior also posted a career high with eight draw controls, while scooping four ground balls and causing three turnovers.
The game was tied at 5-5 with 7:54 left in the first half, but a pair of goals by Zielinski sent the Gators into halftime with a 7-5 lead. Two of the first three goals of the second half were scored by W&J to bring the game back within one goal, but five of the next six tallies came from Gators as the lead swelled to 13-8 midway through the period. After W&J scored to make it 13-9, Allegheny closed the game on a 6-0 run, with five different players scoring during the run.
Sophomore
Evi Malagise (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) scored four goals, while freshman
Mary Allen (Victor, N.Y./Victor) totaled four points with three goals and a helper. She also led all players with 11 draw controls and snagged four ground balls. Sophomore
Brenna Lawler (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) (three points) and senior
Alex Grob (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) each added a pair of goals in the win. Senior
Sarah Basden (Malibu, Calif./Thousand Oaks) followed up her eight-assists performance in the season opener with three helpers against W&J. Sophomore
Gretchen Barbera (Yarmouth, Maine/Yarmouth) registered a game-best six ground balls.
As a team, Allegheny corralled 21-of-30 draws and were successful on 22-of-25 clear attempts. The Gators also outshot the Presidents, 33-21, including 31-18 on goal.
Junior goalie
Steph Shakespeare (Pittsburgh, Pa./Peters Township) improved to 2-0 on the season, making nine saves in playing the whole 60 minutes in cage.
Allegheny will be back in action in one week, traveling to Buffalo State for a 1 p.m. match on Saturday, March 9.
