GRANVILLE, Ohio --
Jordan Rawls went for 42 points -- the second-most in a game in Allegheny men's basketball history -- to lead the Gators to a 90-75 win at Denison and help punch their ticket to the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Tournament.
The Gators will be making their first appearance in the league's championship event since 2014-15 after improving to 9-13 overall and 5-11 in league play. Even if Allegheny would lose both of its remaining games and Denison would win both of its contests, the Gators own the tiebreaker over the Big Red by virtue of sweeping the season series.
Along with being a career high, the 42-point effort by Rawls ranks second in program history to only the 53 points by James Johnston against Edinboro all the way back on March 3, 1953. The 42 markers are the second most by an NCAC player this season and just the third time a Gator has reached 40 points in a game. After scoring 25 points in the first half to help Allegheny to a 48-39 halftime lead, the junior followed that with 17 points over the final 20 minutes. On Saturday, Rawls connected on 15-of-27 shots, including 5-of-10 from three-point range, and knocked down 7-of-8 free throws. His 15 made field goals are third all-time and the 27 attempts are fourth. Additionally, Rawls pulled down 14 rebounds to post the 14th double-double of his career, and sixth this season.
Brian Roberts, Jr. reached 20 points for the fifth time of his rookie campaign, scoring 20 points on 7-of-16 shooting, including a trio of trifectas. The point guard handed out seven assists, which matches his season best for the third time and was tied for the game high.
Caden Hinckley posted his fourth double-double, and third straight, with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
For the game, the Gators shot 48.5 percent (32-of-66) from the field and 45.5 percent (10-of-22) from beyond-the-arc. Allegheny also dominated on the glass, pulling down 50 rebounds to just 31 for Denison.
Allegheny heads into the final week of the regular season and will travel to Hiram for an 8 p.m. tip-off on Wednesday, Feb. 13 before hosting Kenyon at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 16 for Senior Day.
