Allegheny dealt pair of losses by John Carroll

BECKLEY, W. Va. -- The Gators wrapped up their season-opening, three-game series against John Carroll at Linda K. Epling Stadium with a 22-11 loss in the opener before falling, 13-4, in the nightcap.

Game One: John Carroll 22, Allegheny 11

Senior first baseman Tommy Cannon (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) homered in consecutive innings, with a solo shot in the third and a three-run blast in the fourth inning. Senior right fielder Ethan Pawlak (Chardon, Ohio/Gilmour Academy) belted his first home run since March 25, 2017 against Middlebury in the bottom of the sixth when he laced a two-run line-drive over the right-center field fence.

The Gators did all of their scoring in the second-through-sixth innings, with two in the second and sixth, one each of the third and fifth and five in the fourth. The big blow of the fourth inning, along with Cannon's three-run shot, ws a two-run single by senior second baseman Austin Bristol (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park).

In the game, freshman shortstop Jacob Budnar (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Cleveland Heights) went 2-for-3 with his first collegiate hits and one RBI. Cannon finished the game 3-for-5 with two homers, four RBI, and a pair of runs. Pawlaw posted two hits, two RBI and two runs. Senior designated hitter Max Sessions (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) also had a pair of hits, finishing 2-for-3 with a walk, a double and two runs scored.

Freshman Nolan Thompson (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) suffered the loss in relief of his first career outing, surrendering four earned runs on three hits and three walks with one strikeout in 1.0+ inning. He came on in relief of senior Joe Nagel (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy), who worked the first 4.0 innings, giving up eight hits, seven runs (four earned), while striking out five and walking none.

Game Two: John Carroll 13, Allegheny 4

The Gators struck first in the night cap with a run in the top of the first. Pawlak reached on an error by the first baseman that kicked into right field that allowed senior left fielder Brandon Pouch (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny), who doubled to lead off the game, to score.

With one out in the top of the second, senior second baseman Vincent Carone (Erie, Pa./McDowell) singled and later came in to score on an RBI groundout by Pouch.

Freshman right fielder Isaiah Lucas (Butler, Pa./Butler) drew a bases-loaded walk in his first career plate appearance to plate a run in the eighth inning to plate the Gators' third run, and then Carone had an RBI single in the top of the ninth for the final run of the game.

Carone finished 3-for-5 in the second game and Budnar was 2-for-3 in the night cap.

Junior lefty Nate Pastorek (Sarver, Pa./Freeport) was dealt the loss, yielding nine hits and seven runs (six earned) in 2.1 innings. Sophomore Nick Tarasi (Gibsonia, Pa./Shade Side Academy) worked 4.2 innings, giving up eight hits and six runs (all earned) with two walks and two strike outs and junior Wyatt Wright (Guys Mills, Pa./Maplewood) tossed a scoreless eighth inning and surrendered just one hit.
