CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Allegheny led in the eighth inning of the night cap, but was unable to hold on as Case Western Reserve took both games of a doubleheader, 11-4 and 4-3.
All of the Gators damage in game two came in the second inning. Sophomore catcher
Luke Chutko (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) led off the frame with a double and later scored on an infield single by junior center fielder
Bret Kelly (Tonawanda, N.Y./Tonawanda). With two outs, senior second baseman
Vincent Carone (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and senior designated hitter
Brandon Pouch (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny) put up back-to-back RBI singles to make it 3-0 in favor of the guests.
CWRU scored one run in the sixth and seventh innings and then took the lead with a pair of tallies in the bottom of the eighth. Junior
Nate Pastorek (Sarver, Pa./Freeport) took the loss in relief, giving up three hits and three runs (two earned) in 1.1 inning. Senior
Joe Nagel (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy) received a no-decision after working the first 6.0 innings, yielding five hits and just one run while striking out four and walking three.
Kelly had the only multi-hit game for the Gators, finishing 2-for-4, while Chutko's double in the second inning was the lone extra-base hit.
In the opener, Allegheny led 2-0 after half an inning thanks to an RBI double by senior first baseman
Tommy Cannon (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) and an RBI base knock by Chutko. Case quickly responded with three runs of its own in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good before adding five in the fourth and three in the fifth. Allegheny added its final two runs on a two-run homer by Pouch in the fifth inning, his first of the season, and second of his career.
Junior
Sean Kealey (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) fell to 0-2 on the year, surrendering six runs on six hits in 3.1 innings with seven strikeouts and three walks. Senior
Dalton Donachie (New Springfield, Ohio/Springfield Local) toss the final 4.2 innings and ceded five runs (three earned) one five hits, plus four strikeouts, one walk and two hit batters.
The Gators will travel to Waynesburg for a doubleheader against the Yellow Jackets on Tuesday, March 12. Action is set to get under way at 1 p.m.
