Gators open 2019 campaign with 5-0 loss versus John Carroll

BECKLEY, W. Va. -- The Allegheny baseball team recorded five hits, but managed no runs in a season-opening, 5-0 loss in nonconference action against John Carroll at Linda K. Epling Stadium.

The Gators open the season 0-1, but will have two more chances against the Blue Streaks this weekend as the teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 24 beginning at 10 a.m.

Sophomore catcher Luke Chutko (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) paced the offense with two of the team's five hits, a pair of singles, while senior left fielder Brandon Pouch (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny) added the lone extra-base hit of the evening for the Gators, a two-out double to left-center in the top of the sixth. Senior second baseman Austin Bristol (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) led off the game with a single and junior right fielder Bret Kelly (Tonawanda, N.Y./Tonawanda) added a base knock of his own.

Junior left-handed pitcher Sean Kealey (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) suffered the loss on the mound to fall to 0-1. The southpaw worked 5.1 innings, surrendering eight hits and two runs (both earned), while walking five and striking out five. Senior righty Dalton Donachie (New Springfield, Ohio/Springfield Local) worked the final 2.2 innings, allowing five hits and three earned runs. He also struck out seven, the second-most of his tenure in Blue & Gold, including a pair when entering in relief with the bases loaded and one out in the sixth.
