MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Allegheny men's basketball team fell to Wooster, 62-61, in the 2019-20 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) opener for both teams on Wednesday (Dec. 4).
With the game tied at 60-60 and 16 seconds remaining,
Caden Hinckley (Boise, Idaho/Mount Lebanon (Pa.)) made one-of-two free throws and gave Allegheny a 61-60 advantage. The Fighting Scots were able to answer on the other end when Danyon Hempy found just enough room to sink a two-point jumper with six seconds left on the clock. That shot proved to be the difference as the Gators were unable to get a shot off at the other end.
Allegheny trailed, 31-28, at halftime, but owned a 33-31 edge in the second half. For the game, the Gators shot 48.0 percent (24-of-50) and held the Scots to just 34.3 percent (24-of-70), while owning a 43-35 lead in rebounding.
Jordan Rawls (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) led all players with 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting, his fifth game over 20 points in Allegheny's seven contests this season and 22nd consecutive game in double digits. He went over 1,400 career points with that showing and also pulled down six boards.
Keeno Holmes (Pittsburgh, Pa./Lincoln Park) made 5-of-9 field-goal attempts en route to 14 points, his fourth time in double figures.
Jordan Greynolds (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton) led all players with 10 rebounds, matching his career high. He also added six points.
Nijon Kirkman (Cleveland, Ohio/John Hay) contributed eight points and six rebounds and Hinckley added seven points, four boards, two blocks and two assists.
Brian Roberts, Jr. (Copley, Ohio/Copley) dished out five assists for tops in the game.
The Gators continue conference play on Saturday, Dec. 7 when they travel to No. 3 Wittenberg. Tip-off in Springfield, Ohio is set for 3:00 p.m.
