MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Allegheny football team dominated the battle at the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball, scoring 24 unanswered points en route to a 24-14 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) win over Wooster on Senior Day at Frank B. Fuhrer Field.
The Gators held the ball for 38:12 (improving to 3-0 when leading in time of possession this season), including 13:30 in the fourth quarter, and racked up 273 yards on 62 rushes as part of 480 yards of offense on 80 plays. Senior
Tonye Hamilton (Richmond Heights, Ohio/Richmond Heights) led the ground attack with a career-best 97 yards on 19 carries. Junior
Chase Balla (New Kensington, Pa./Valley), playing running back for the second-straight week in addition to his linebacker position, also rushed 19 times, picking up 82 yards and a touchdown. Sophomore
Trey Adams (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) added 71 yards and a score on 14 carries. Senior
Alex Victor (Miami, Fla./G. Holmes Braddock) added 47 yards, fueled by a 37-yard rush, on a pair of totes.
After falling behind, 14-0, at the 11:19-mark of the second quarter, the Gators marched 68 yards on eight plays to answer back and cut the margin half, 14-7. A big play (20-yard reception) by senior
Ben Bachik (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) helped spring the drive, which was capped by a 10-yard pass from junior
Nazareth Greer (Apache Junction, Ariz./Marcos De Niza). The defense forced a Wooster punt on the next drive, which led to Balla's two-yard scoring plunge at 1:18 of the second quarter, which sent the two teams into the locker room square at 14-14.
Allegheny got the ball to start the second half and used 4:37 of clock over 11 plays and 61 yards, capped by Adams going in from three yards out, 21-14. The final points of the game came on a 30-yard field goal by sophomore
Nick Leinenweber (Neptune Beach, Fla./Episcopal School) at 6:41 of the fourth quarter, at the end of a 13-play drive that took 7:39. Two of the next three plays run by Wooster were intercepted passes by the Gator defense, as senior
Quinten Hunt (Buckeye, Ariz./Buckeye) and junior
Josh Miller (Griffith, Ind./Griffith) sealed the victory.
Greer completed 13-of-18 passes for 155 yards and a score in the win. Victor, Allegheny's career leader in every receiving category, finished with six receptions for 38 yards and a score. Bachik caught three passes for 81 yards.
Senior
Kyle McGee (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville Manlius) recorded his fifth double-digit tackle of the season, and eighth of his career, by posting 13 tackles (four solo, nine assisted). Balla added 10 stops and a forced fumble. Hunt and Miller were the third and fourth Gators in the tackle column, adding seven and six tackles, respectively, to go along with their interceptions. Hunt also broke up three passes. Junior
Hunter Cazin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) and senior
Austin Hoyt (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) each recorded tackles for losses in the win.
Allegheny finishes the home portion of the 2019 season 3-2 at home, and improves to 3-6 overall this year, 3-5 in the NCAC. The Gators will close out the campaign next weekend, Saturday, Nov. 16 with a 1 p.m. kick-off at Oberlin.
