MEADVILLE, Pa. - The Allegheny women's soccer team used three consecutive goals to defeat Westminster, 3-2, on Wednesday (Oct. 9).
The Titans struck first as a back and forth battle of counterattacks led to a goal by Ashley Frank in the 14th minute. Less than three minutes later, the Gators found the equalizer. Allegheny won the ball near midfield and then
Emily Orr (Coraopolis, Pa./Moon Area) pushed a through ball to a sprinting
Taylor Renk (Cranberry Township, Pa./Oakland Catholic), who planted the ball in the back of the net.
In the 60th minute, a handball in the box by Westminster afforded Allegheny a penalty kick. Orr struck the ball to the goalie's left and gave the Gators the 2-1 advantage.
The Gators stayed on the offensive and scored the eventual game winner in the 75th minute. Renk weaved in and out of defenders on her way towards the goal and fired a shot. The Titans goalie blocked the shot but it caromed towards
Kelli Gaus (Fombell, Pa./Riverside) who shot the ball inside the right post for the score.
The Titans made a last ditch effort to tie the game with a goal in the 90th minute, but that would yield the final result of 3-2.
Maya Hackman (Derry, Pa./Derry Area) earned the win in net for the Gators and made two saves, including an impressive stop in the 33rd minute that she sent up against the crossbar and the defense rallied to clear the ball out of danger.
Renk led the offense with five shots, a season-high four on goal, a goal and an assist. Orr followed with four shots, plus her goal and assist.
Shannon McGuinn (Warminster, Pa./William Tennant) added three shots, while
Amy Barra (Coral Springs, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) and
Alex Klare (Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) each tallied two.
The Gators head out on a two-game conference road trip as they travel to Oberlin on Saturday (Oct. 15) before going to Kenyon on Wednesday (Oct. 19).
