Gators get double digit win at Oberlin, 83-66

OBERLIN, Ohio -- The Allegheny men's basketball team pushed past Oberlin, 83-66, on the road for a consecutive North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) win.

The 17-point triumph is the largest margin of victory for the Gators in an NCAC game since toppling Kenyon at home, 90-73, on Jan. 25, 2017, and the largest road NCAC win since also besting Kenyon (in Gambier, Ohio), 89-57, on Jan. 5, 2010.

Trailing by five, 18-13, with just over 11 minutes to play in the first half, the Gators got a three-pointer from Jordan Rawls and a layup by Zach Ecker to knot the score, 18-18, at the 9:11-mark. After a pair of free throws 17 seconds later put Oberlin up by two, Billy Urso connected on a three-pointer that gave Allegheny the lead, 21-20.

The teams traded buckets until Oberlin led by a 24-23 count with under six minutes left in the opening period. From that point, the Gators used three trifectas to close the half on a 15-3 run and take a 38-27 lead into intermission. A layup by Nijon Kirkman jump-started the run and a triple by Caden Hinckley was sandwiched between two of the same from Brian Roberts, Jr.

The Gators swelled the lead to 20 points, 56-36, by the 11:40-mark of the second period, thanks to a 13-2 run that spanned 5:32. The Yeomen responded with a 9-0 run of their own to cut the lead to 11, 56-45, but back-to-back three pointers by Jordan Greynolds and Rawls pushed the lead back to 17, 62-45, with under eight minutes to play. Again Oberlin would cut the advantage to 13 points, 66-53, at 5:12, but Rawls and Roberts, Jr. each knocked down a triple on consecutive trips down the court, Roberts, Jr.'s coming on the fastbreak following a Rawls defensive rebound.

Rawls topped 20 points for the fifth time this season, pouring in 22 points thanks to 8-of-14 from the field and 4-of-6 from three-point range. In the process, he topped 1,000 career points, becoming the 29th player in Allegheny men's basketball history to reach that mark. He also had five boards and four assists. Roberts, Jr. was in double figures for the fifth-straight contest and 11th time this season, putting up 18 points on 6-of-10 from the field and 4-of-5 from beyond-the-arc. Hinckley led all players with 10 rebounds, plus added 16 points (including a perfect 3-for-3 from three) for his first collegiate double-double. Greynolds and Urso each knocked down a pair of trifectas as Allegheny shot 57.7 percent (15-of-26) from distance.

Allegheny will return home to the David V. Wise Center for five of its next six games, beginning with a 3 p.m. tip-off against Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday, Jan. 19. The Bishops narrowly defeated the Gators on Dec. 1 in Ohio, 77-71.
