Grove City Slips Past Gators in Double OT

MEADVILLE, Pa.—The Allegheny College men's soccer team took Grove City College to double overtime, but the Wolverines ended the scoreless game with a goal in the 108th minute goal Saturday (Sept. 8).

In the opening half, the Gators applied some early pressure but had a pair of shots go wide and another blocked.  For the 45 minutes, the Wolverines outshot the Gators 6-4, but it remained scoreless at the half.

The Wolverines continued to pressure the Gators in the second half as they owned a 16-4 advantage in shots.  Nick Ferreira held strong in net for the Gators though as he made five saves in the frame.  Grove City had a chance to end the game in regulation but a shot from close range was blocked as time expired.

The Gators had the first scoring chance in overtime as Ryan Clydesdale had a shot from less than five-yards out, but the Grove City goalie turned the shot away.  Off that corner kick, Kristian Snyder headed a ball that went just less than a yard wide.

Later in the first extra session, Ferreira came out of net to make a stop in a one-on-one situation to preserve the tied game.

Late in the second overtime, the Wolverines broke the standstill as Jon Burton fed a pass to Franklin Tropiano, who scored from seven-yards out to pick up the 1-0 overtime win.

Ferreira made eight saves in net for the Gators.  Clydesdale led the Gators with three shots.

"I was pleased with the way we competed, but it was definitely lesson learned for our guys about how a few plays can be a difference," said Gator Head Coach Angelo Panzetta. "It magnified how sharp we need to be at all times."

The Gators are back in action Wednesday (Sept. 12) when they play host to Baldwin Wallace University.  That match is slated for a 7:30 p.m. start.
