Gators Win Thrilling Nonconference Match Against Baldwin Wallace

MEADVILLE, Pa.— The Allegheny College men's soccer team won a thrilling non-conference tilt against Baldwin Wallace University Wednesday (Sept. 12) 3-2 in the friendly confines of Frank B. Fuhrer Field in Meadville.

The Yellow Jackets struck first in the 19th minute as Cannon Dees scored off an assist from Joey Geither at the top of the box.

The Gators tied it up shortly after.  In the 21st minute, Matt Massucci set Jacob LeSane up with a pass near the far side corner flag.  LeSane sent it across the goal line, hitting the far, inside post and bouncing in.  The goal was the first of his career.

After a corner kick in the 35th minute, Owen Harkins blasted a shot that got blocked and bounced around the goalie box.  Jon Sion picked up then ball and beat the goalkeeper to give the Gators a 2-1 advantage.

The Gators added to that lead in the 55th minute.  Eddie Opalko snuck a low corner kick through the defense to the far side of the box, finding Nick Taliani who knocked it home, making it 3-1.

Baldwin Wallace made it interesting in the 69th minute when Atilla Nagy Jr. buried a nice cross that bounced around the box to bring the game within one.

In the closing minutes, the Yellow jackets continued to pressure the Gator defense, who was playing man-down due to a red card, but Allegheny held strong as they secured the 3-2 non-conference win.

LeSane, Sion and Taliani had the Gator goals, with Massucci and Opalko adding assists.

Cory Wiard picked up the win in net, making five saves.

The Gators are back in action Saturday (Sept. 15) for a non-conference bout against Penn State Behrend at home.  Gametime is slated for 5 p.m.
