Gator Men Sweep Home Invitational

MEADVILLE, Pa.—The Allegheny College men's tennis team went 2-0 at the 2018 Nancy and Harvey Heath Invitational Saturday (Sept. 22) in Meadville, dispatching Franciscan University and Grove City College by a combined score of 18-0.
 
The win marked the second straight title for the Gators at their home invitational.
 
In their opening match of the day, the Gators swept Franciscan University.
 
At first doubles, Colton Johnson Taylor and Wonjoon Cho topped Gary Pierre and Georgio Alexander 8-4. The second doubles team of Zach Anderson and Cooper Miller cruised to an 8-1 win against Billy Presume and Walter Matt while the third doubles team of Matt Andrus and Maxkenzie Knowlton collected an 8-2 win against Christian Capello and Aiden Howard.
 
At first singles, Johnson Taylor faced Pierre. Johnson Taylor controlled the first set, taking it 6-1, but Pierre bounced back with a 6-3 set two win to set up a super tiebreaker. Johnson Taylor was able to break Pierre in the tiebreaker en route to a 10-6 win.
 
Cho faced Matt at second singles, winning in a quick 6-1, 6-1 fashion. Miller also had a quick match at third singles as he defeated Presume 6-1, 6-0.
 
At fourth singles, Knowlton faced Alexander. Knowlton was able to break in set one to win 6-4.. The momentum carried over to set two as he won 6-3.
 
Andrus faced Aidan at fifth singles, as he won 6-2, 6-1.
 
Anderson completed the sweep for the Gators as he defeated Joseph Suess 6-0, 6-2 at sixth singles.
 
In the middle match of the afternoon, Grove City defeated Franciscan 8-1.
 
In the final match of the event, the Gators swept Grove City.
 
Johnson Taylor and Cho collected their second win of the day at first doubles as they defeated Karsten Lagerquist and Domon Deck 8-3.  Anderson and Miller had another strong showing at second doubles as they defeated Andrew Rodenbeck and Paul Hodge 8-0.  Knowlton and Andrus rounded out the doubles action for the Gators as they defeated Miguel Esteban Diaz and Edward Doyle 8-4 at third doubles.
 
At first singles, Johnson Taylor completed his day with a 6-2, 6-3 win against Lagerquist.  Cho topped Esteban Diaz 6-2, 6-2 in the second singles flight.
 
At third singles, Miller defeated Doyle 6-2, 6-0 while Knowlton won 7-5 6-1 against Deck.
 
Andrus remained perfect on the day with a 6-3, 6-2 win against Hodge while Anderson completed the sweep with a 6-1, 6-0 win against Rodenbeck.
 
The Invitational concluded the fall season for the Gators.  The will be back in action Feb. 9 on the road at Houghton.
