Gators Sweep in Thiel in Home Opener

MEADVILLE, Pa.— The Allegheny College women's tennis team opened the home portion of their 2018-19 schedule in a non-confernce bout against Thiel College Tuesday (Sept. 18).
 
The Gators won the contest 9-0.
 
Amanda Ress Liere and Miharu Joh were the first off the court in doubles.  The Gator duo faced Shyann Foreman and Angela Campbell in the first flight, sweeping the Tomcat pair 8-0.
 
At third doubles, Gretchen Norton and Liz Evans faced Amelia Mutinelli and Diamon Butler.  The teams were evenly matched early on.  Norton and Evans were able to break the Tomcat serve to gain the advantage.  After that break, Norton and Evans rode the momentum to an 8-3 victory.
 
Savannah Gray and Hannah Schaffer collected the win at second doubles to wrap up the doubles sweep.  Gray and Schaffer were down early to Allyson Stanley and Abby Bowser, but the Gators broke  and held serve as they took a 7-6 advantage.  The Gators then won the next game to take it 8-6.
 
Ress Liere kept up the dominant play at first singles as she swept Foreman 6-0, 6-0.
 
Koh picked up her second win of the day at second singles, clinching the match for the Gator.  Koh faced Angela Campbell for the second time.  After sweeping the first set, Koh took the second set 6-1.
 
Evans and Schaffer also picked up their second wins of the day.  At fifth singles, Schaffer faced Mutinelli and won in straight sets.  At sixth singles, Evans faced Butler once again.  After taking the first set 6-1, Evans wrapped up the match with a 6-3 win in the second.
 
At fourth singles, Candace Burkhammer faced Bowser.  Burkhammer took the first set 6-3 before dominating the second set 6-0 for the win.
 
Gray wrapped up the Gator sweep at third singles as she bested Stanley.  Stanley won the opening set 6-4, but Gray bounced back with a 6-1 win in the second.  That sent the match . to a super tiebreaker, which Gray won 10-4.
 
The Gators are back in action Saturday (Sept. 22) at home in the Nancy and Harvey Heath Gator Invitational.
