Gators Fall at 14th-Ranked Carnegie Mellon

PITTSBURGH, Pa.— The Allegheny College men's soccer team fell to 14th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University 8-1 Monday (Sept. 17) in Pittsburgh.

The Tartan offense tested the Gators throughout the evening as they owned a 27-7 advantage in the shot department.

The teams traded shots to begin the game, with Dillon Thoma's shot being saved, and Cody Wiard making a save for the Gators.

The Tartans found the back of the net in the 11th minute.  Phillip Petrakian served a ball in from the near corner flag which was headed in by Nicolas Proveda.  A minute later, Painter scored off of a corner kick to make it 2-0.  Thirty seconds later, Zack Masciopinto scored off a Proveda cross, making it 3-0.

The Tartans continued to pepper the Gators with shots, scoring a fourth goal in the 40th minute off the foot of Patrick Kollman.

Late in the opening half, the Gators had a couple of scoring chances.  Nick Taliani's rocket of shot from 15-yards out was turned away, and Thoma's shot went high as they headed into the half.

In the 48th minute, Carnegie Mellon extended their lead to 5-0 when Elliot Cohen scored on a chip shot.

The Gators got on the board in the 49th minute when Erik Orta scored off a Danny Reid corner kick.  The goal marled the first of the season for Orta and Reid's fifth assist.

However, the Tartans added two more goals late in the game to secure the non-conference win.

Eliiot Cohen and Patrick Kollman led Carnegie Mellon with two goals and one assist apiece.

Thoma led the Gators with three shots, two of which were on target.

Wiard finished the match with eight saves.

The Gartors are back in action Saturday (Sept. 22) as they open up North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) play at Denison University.
