Gators Drop Nonconference Bout at John Carroll

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio— The Allegheny College volleyball team fell in non-conference play to John Carroll University in straight sets Tuesday (Sept. 11).

John Carroll won the sets 25-11, 25-12 and 25-15.

The Blue Streaks got off to a 7-3 lead in the opening set, leading to a Gator timeout.  The Blue Streaks pushed the lead to 9-3 but the Gators slowly chipped away, bringing the score within four at 11-7.  However, the Blue Streaks went on a 4-1 run, leading to a second Gator timeout.  John Carroll allowed just three more Gator points down the stretch as they won the opening set 25-11.

Similar to the opening set, the Blue Streaks took an early lead, 9-1.  The Gators called a timeout in attempt to halt the Blue Streak momentum.  They made up some ground, but were unable to overcome the early deficit as John Carroll took the set 25-12.

Once again, the Blue Streaks took a 9-1 lead to open the third set.    After an Allegheny timeout, the Blue Streaks continued to control the flow of the set.  Late in the set, the Gators went on a run but the Blue Streaks won the set 25-15 to clinch the match.

Jyl Russotti, Grace Lengauer and Rebecca MacQuarrie had four kills apiece to lead the Gators.  Alysha Crowther had a pair of blocks to go with a pair of kills. Olivia D'Andrea and Kristiana Hardisty had six assists each.

Lengauer, D'Andrea and Rachel Slotterback had five digs apiece.

Cassi Calamunci and Brooke Hjerpe led John Carroll with 11 kills apiece.  Hjerpe also led the Blue Streaks with eight digs.

The Gators are back in action Friday (Sept. 14) against Geneva College at Buffalo State University.
