ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Host Nazareth scored two goals in each half to defeat Allegheny 4-0 in the opening match of the 2018 season.
The Golden Flyers (1-0) scored twice in the opening 30 minutes, before adding on a pair of insurance tallies in the second half. Nazareth closed the game with a 16-5 advantage in shots, with 11 attempts on goal.Â
Nazareth's offense tested the Gators early, posting four shots on goal over the first 10 minutes of action, each turned aside by Allegheny keeper
Maya Hackman. Allegheny's first scoring chance came in the game's eighth minute, but came up empty on the first corner kick of the match.
The hosts took a 1-0 lead at the 12:45 mark of the opening half when Mary LoCicero corralled a long pass from midfield and knocked it home.
After the early Nazareth offensive surge, play evened out, with the Gators earning another corner attempt in the 17th minute, but were unable to convert.Â
In the 28th minute, the Golden Flyers took advantage of a Gator foul just outside the box, with LoCicero netting her second goal of the game on a free kick from 20 yards out to give the hosts a 2-0 advantage.Â
Nazareth garnered two corner kicks over the next 10 minutes, but the Gator defense held strong. Allegheny would then out-shoot the Golden Flyers 3-0 over the final seven minutes of the half, but were unable to gain any momentum heading into the break, as two attempts were saved and a third went wide.
Less than a minute into the second stanza, a shot from Allegheny's
Amy Barra was saved, and the Golden Flyers would quickly counter, as Kristen Prohaska scored on the ensuing possession to make it a three-goal lead with just over 43 minutes left in regulation.Â
Over the next 30 minutes, the two teams would combine for just two shots and two corner kicks, before Nazareth closed out the game's scoring with a goal from Mallory Ott with just over 24 minutes remaining. The Golden Flyer defense would then allow just one Gator shot over the final 22 minutes of play to close out the shutout victory.
Five different players accounted for the Gator shots, including Barra,
Shannon McGuinn,
Taylor Renk, and
Emily Orr. Hackman went the distance in the Allegheny goal, finishing with seven saves.
The Gators will now have a quick turnaround, as they close out their two-day stay in Rochester with a 3 p.m. match at the Rochester Institute of Technology on Sat. Sept. 1.Â
