ROCHESTER, N.Y. - A late second-half surge pushed host Rochester Institute of Technology to a 4-0 defeat of the Gators on a steamy afternoon in central New York.
The Allegheny (0-2) defense withstood a first half charge from the Tigers (2-0) to keep the game scoreless for 58 minutes. However, R.I.T. would break it open with four goals over the final 32 minutes of play, including three in a 10-minute span late in the half.
Missing a pair of regular starters due to injury, the Gators were limited to just two shots and three corner kicks on the afternoon, while R.I.T. ended with 24 shots and six corners.
Over the first half, the Allegheny defense held strong against constant pressure from the Tigers' offense. Though the Tigers had 10 first half shots, the Gator defense forced all but two of them wide, as rookie keeper
Kaitlynn Rees, made a pair of saves in the first half of her first career start.
The Gators saw their first prime scoring chance in the 50th minute, as
Isabella Martinez's corner kick led to a
Shannon McGuinn shot that was saved. The Tigers would counter with four shots over the next six minutes, with Rees making two more saves, before taking a 1-0 lead on a goal by Lauren Zeglen with 31:55 left in regulation.
Allegheny would hold the Tiger offense at bay for the next 10 minutes, before R.I.T.'s Mia White would strike for an insurance tally with just over 17 minutes remaining.
After Rees was forced from the game due to injury, emergency keeper
Amber Lisman stopped her first shot with 14 minutes left, but a foul in deep led to an R.I.T. penalty kick goal scored by Marla Roberts with 7:28 to go. Less than 30 seconds later, the Tigers closed out the day's scoring with a goal from Maggie Hoey to make it 4-0.
The Tigers maintained a 14-2 advantage in shots over the second half, with
Emily Orr's shot on goal in the 86th minute joining McGuinn's effort in the early moments of the half.
Rees finished with five saves over the first 73 minutes, while Lisman recorded two stops in the final 17.
The Gators will return to action on Wednesday, September 5, when they open the 2018 home slate with a 7:30 p.m. meeting with Pitt-Bradford under the lights at Frank B. Fuhrer Field.Â
