Gators Fall in Regular Season Finale to Denison

MEADVILLE, Pa.— The Allegheny College softball team fell in their regular season finale at home against North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) foe Denison University Sunday (April 29) in Meadville.

The Big Red won game one 9-0 and game two 9-5.

Before the game, the Gators honored their two seniors – Rachel Ramsey and Jessica Zavolta.

Game One – Denison 9, Allegheny 0 (6 innings)

After a scoreless first inning, the Big Red got on the board in the second as they plated three runs to take the lead.  Kyleigh Cason had a hit in the second, and Kelly Lafferty in the third, but both were stranded.

After adding a run in the fifth, the Big Red added five runs to make it 9-0 in the sixth.  In the bottom of the frame, the Big Red retired the side to seal the win.

Game Two – Denison 9, Allegheny 5

The Big Red scored one in the first, and two in the second to gain a 3-0 lead.

The Gators responded in the bottom of the second.  Zavolta led off with a single to right field.  Jessica Valerino moved her to second on a sac bunt.  A hard hit ball by Kyleigh Cason snuck out of the infield and brought Zavolta around for the run.

However, the Big Red scored two runs in the third and sixth and one run in the fourth and fifth to take a 9-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh.

With one out, Hayley Behr reached via error.  Zavolta followed up with a single through the right side to put a runner in scoring position.   Cason loaded the bases on an infield single. Delaney Harrison-Peters earned a walk, which brought Zavolta home and cut the lead to 9-2.  Rachel Ramsey followed up with a single through the left side, bringing Valerino home.

In the bottom of the eighth, Lafferty earned a walk to lead off the inning.  After moving to second, Behr singled on a liner to center field, bringing Lafferty home to cut the lead to 9-4.  Zavolta also earned a walk to put Behr in scoring position.  A walk to Valerino loaded the bases.  After a strikeout made it two outs, Harrison-Peters singled through the right side, scoring Behr to make it 9-5, keeping the bases loaded.  However, the Big Red got out of the inning and sealed the 9-5 win.

Zavolta, Cason and Ramsey had two hits apiece while Harrison-Peters had a pair of RBI.

The Gators are back in action Thursday (May 3), competing in the 2018 NCAC Championships.
