SPRINGFIELD, Ohio— The Allegheny College softball team fell in their opening game of the 2018 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Championships to top-seed Wittenberg University Friday (May 4) 11-4.

The Gators got on the board in the opening frame.Â
Hayley Behr singled down the right field line with two outs. After
Jessica Zavolta earned a walk,
Jessica Valerino singled to left center, bringing Behr home.Â
Kyleigh Cason followed up with a RBI single to right center to make it 2-0. However, the Tigers took advantage of three hits in the bottom of the frame as they took a 3-2 lead.Â

In the third, Valerino hit a one-out double to left field. Cason followed up with her second hit of the game to put runners on the corners.Â
Samantha Valera then grounded out to the shortstop, but the contact was able to bring Valerino home to tie the game at three. Once again, the Tigers followed up a Gator scoring frame by scoring three runs to jump ahead 6-3.Â

The Gators got a run back in the fourth,
Jessica Gordon beat out an infield hit, and moved to second on a Behr single. Zavolta doubled to center field, scoring Behr to cut the lead to 6-4. In the bottom of the frame, the Tigers continued to answer the Gator runs as this time they plated four runs to move ahead 10-4. They then added one run in the sixth to take an 11-4 lead into the seventh.

In the seventh,
Lauren Durboraw was hit by pitch, but the Gators were unable to put runs across the plate as they fell 11-4.

Gordon, Behr, Valerino and Cason all had two hits apiece while Zavolta, Valerino, Cason and Valera brought the runs home.

With the loss, the Gators will play Denison University at 10 a.m. tomorrow.
