WOOSTER, Ohio – The Allegheny baseball team saw its three-game winning streak come to a close after suffering a doubleheader sweep at North Coast Athletic Conference leader Wooster.
The Fighting Scots (25-3, 12-0 NCAC), ranked second in the Apr. 16 D3Baseball.com Top 25 poll, defeated the Gators (12-16, 5-6 NCAC) by scores of 15-4 and 8-4.
GAME ONE
In the opener, the Wooster offense got out to a fast start and totaled 21 hits for the games, while riding a strong start from hurler Nanak Saran.
The Scots jumped out to a quick lead in the bottom of the first, sending eight men to the plate and totaling four runs, with the big blast a two-run homer from Jake Fling, to take an early 4-0 lead.
Wooster would put together another lengthy frame in the bottom of the third, scoring three runs on three hits and a walk to up the lead to 7-0, before adding single tallies in both the fourth and fifth innings to take a nine-run lead.
The Gator offense was unable to cut into the deficit, as Saran failed to allow his first base runner – a wild pitch on a third strike – until there were two outs in the top of the sixth.
The Fighting Scots then blew the game open with six runs on six hits and an error in the bottom of the sixth.
Allegheny's offense finally broke through in the top of the seventh when they plated all four of their runs for the game.
Cullen Flaherty led off the inning with a single, the Gators' first hit of the game, before
Brandon Pouch was walked and
Tommy Cannon was hit by a pitch. With one out,
Ethan Pawlak drew a free pass to score Flaherty, before
Luke Chutko plated Pouch with a sacrifice fly.
Max Sessions then closed out the big inning with an opposite field single to right field that plated the Gators' third and fourth runs of the frame.
Gator reliever
Nick Tarasi would keep Wooster off the board over the final two innings, but Allegheny was unable to cut into the deficit any further, and saw their three-game winning streak snapped.
Sessions went 2-for-4, while Pouch added a single, to join Flaherty in the hit column for the loss.
Dalton Donachie started and worked 2 1/3 innings on the mound and was tagged with the loss, allowing seven runs on seven hits. Tarasi, the Gators' third hurler in the game, worked the final three innings, and allowed just three unearned runs.
Saran earned the victory, working the first seven innings and allowing four runs on two hits and two walks. Michael Wielansky went 4-for-5 with four runs scored to lead Wooster's 21-hit attack, while Garrett Crum and Jake Stuursma each had three hits.
GAME TWO
In a back-and-forth nightcap, the Fighting Scots scored four times in the seventh to break a 4-all tie and earn the doubleheader sweep.
Allegheny shrugged off the opening game loss to take an early lead in the day's second game behind the legs of Flaherty. The Gator rightfielder led off the game by reaching on a base-hit bunt, before stealing second, taking third on a wild pitch, and scoring on a passed ball with two outs to give Allegheny a 1-0 advantage.
The Gators added on in the top of the second.
Bret Kelly opened with a walk, before a
Luke Chutko double put runners at the corners.
Ronaldo Del Duca would then follow with a ground out that brought Kelly home with the Gators' second run of the day.
The 2-0 lead was short-lived, however, as Wooster countered with three runs on four hits in the bottom of the second to take a one-run lead.
After the Gators wasted a leadoff double from
Ethan Pawlak in the bottom of the fourth, the Fighting Scots would take a 4-2 lead on a squeeze bunt in the bottom half of the frame.
Gator starter
Sean Kealey would then keep the Scots in check over the next two frames, allowing just one baserunner, before the Allegheny offense came back to live in the top of the sixth.
Noah Shannon drew a walk to open the frame, before a one-out single from Kelly put runners at first and second. Two batters later, Pouch laced a pinch hit double to center field to plate both runners and tie the game at 4-4.
Kealey retired the Scots in order in the bottom of the sixth, but in the seventh the hosts batted around and scored four runs on four hits and an error before
Cy Perry came out of the bullpen to get a ground ball to end the inning with the bases loaded.
The Allegheny offense was unable to offer another counter punch, as the Gators managed just one hit between the seventh and ninth, and Wooster held on for the win.
The Gators totaled eight hits in the loss, with
Tyler Wagner going 2-for-4, while Shannon drew a pair of walks and scored a run, and Kelly went 1-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored.
Kealey was saddled with the loss, working six innings and allowing seven runs (six earned) on eight hits, with seven strikeouts. Perry, the Gators' third pitcher of the game, threw the final 1 1/3 and allowed no runs on two hits.
Max Lackner earned the win for Wooster in relief of starter Brian Murray, throwing a scoreless inning and a third. Harrison Walls went 3-for-4 to lead a Wooster offense that produced 12 hits.
The Gators will now have a quick turnaround, as they are scheduled to return to action on Sunday, Apr. 22 with a 3 p.m. bout against Hiram at the Robertson Athletic Complex. Allegheny will be going for a sweep in the season series with the Terriers, after topping them 5-2 four days prior.
