Slow Start Dooms Gators in Loss to Baldwin Wallace

BEREA, Ohio - The Allegheny baseball team was unable to dig itself out of an early hole, as the Gators fell 11-2 at 15th-ranked Baldwin Wallace in non-conference action at the Yellow Jackets' Fisher Field.

Baldwin Wallace jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back, pounding out 15 hits to improve to 15-4 on the season.  With the loss, the Gators fall to 5-10.

After averaging over seven runs and 11 hits per game during their recent eight-game spring break trip to Tucson, Arizona, the Gator offense was limited to just three hits by five Baldwin Wallace hurlers.

Baldwin Wallace sent nine men to the plate and scored five runs on five hits before recording an out in the bottom of the first, with the big blows being a two-run home run from Alex Marcum, and a two-run double by Philip Wells.  The hosts would go on to add one run in the second and three in the third to up their lead to 9-0, before the Gators finally found the scoreboard in the top of the fifth.

With one out in the inning, Noah Shannon drew a walk, before Max Sessions singled and Chase Davis took a base-on-balls to load the bases.  Keegan Phillips would draw Allegheny's third free pass of the game, plating Shannon, and Cullen Flaherty would follow with single to right field to Sessions with the Gators' second run.

Flaherty's single marked the last baserunner of the game for the Gators, however, as Baldwin Wallace relievers Max Adams, Jack Haines, and Michael Hubert combined to set down the final 15 Allegheny batters in a row.  The hosts would go on to add single runs in the fifth and eighth innings to close out the game's scoring.

Joe Nagel started on the mound and took the loss for the Gators, allowing five runs on five hits.  Nate Pastorek threw five innings of relief, allowing five runs (four earned) with four strikeouts, while Dalton Donachie surrendered just one unearned run in 2 2/3 innings before giving way to Nick DiBucci, who retired the only batter he faced.

The Gators will now have a five-day respite before opening up North Coast Athletic Conference play on Saturday, March 31 with a 12 noon doubleheader at Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana.
