Gators Drop Series Finale in West Virginia

BECKLEY, W.Va. - The Allegheny baseball team was defeated 16-4 in the finale of a three-game series with John Carroll at Linda K. Epling Stadium.

The Blue Streaks broke open a tie game with nine unanswered runs between the sixth and seventh innings to improve to 2-1 on the year, while the Gators fell to 1-2.

With two outs in the top of the first, the Gators took an early lead.  After Ethan Pawlak laced a single to left center, Tommy Cannon blasted a line drive double off the fence in left field to plate Pawlak and give Allegheny an early 1-0 advantage.

John Carroll answered right back in the home half of the first, as the Blue Streaks sent nine men to the plate and scored four runs on seven hits to take a 4-1 lead.

In the top of the second, Dan Bonnett reached on an error, before Luke Chutko and Max Sessions drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. Vincent Carone followed with a sacrifice fly to left, bringing home Sessions to cut the deficit to 4-2. Keegan Phillips promptly laced a single to right center to score Chutko and make it a one-run game.

The Gators then tied it in the top of the third. Pawlak reached on an error to start the inning, before advancing to third on a Tyler Wagner single.  Bonnett then laced a single to left to plate Pawlak and make it 4-4.

Allegheny's bats would then go cold, as the next 12 Gators were set down in order.  Meanwhile, John Carroll took over, scoring 11 runs over the sixth and seventh innings to pull away.

A day after racking 31 hits in the doubleheader split with John Carroll, the Gators were held to just six base knocks in the series finale, one each from Phillips, Pawlak, Cannon, Wagner, Bonnett, and Andrew Vincent.

Dalton Donachie started on the mound and took the loss, working three innings and allowing seven runs on nine hits, with three strikeouts.  A total of five pitchers worked on the afternoon for the Gators, with Dylan Moore throwing a scoreless eighth.

Derek Penman and Dominic Mittiga each had three hits apiece to pace JCU's 16-hit attack, with Mittiga driving in four RBIs.  Starter Steven Virost earned the win, allowing four runs (two earned) on five hits, with four strikeouts in six innings of work.

The Gators will now have a six-day layoff before returning to action for another neutral site weekend series, as they face Case Western Reserve on both Saturday and Sunday, Mar. 3-4, at Washington & Jefferson College's Ross Memorial Park.
