DELEWARE, Ohio—The Allegheny College women's basketball team opened North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) play Saturday (Dec. 1) at Ohio Wesleyan University, but fell in the game 69-63.
The teams went back-and-forth in the opening quarter, finding themselves tied at 10 with four minutes to play.
Rylee Donovan gave the Gators a 13-10 edge on a three-pointer, but the Battling Bishops closed out the frame on a 6-0 run to take a 26-13 lead into the second.
The Gators opened the second on a 6-0 run. A pair of
Delaney Arbore free-throws gave them back the lead at 17-16. However, Ohio Wesleyan netted eight quick points to gain a 25-19 lead. The Gators pulled within two, 26-24, late in the half on a
Julianna Skowron basket, the Battling Bishops owned a 29-26 advantage heading into the half.
Arbore led the Gators with 10 points in the opening half. Skowron added eight points with six rebounds while Donovan added six points.
The Battling Bishops lead grew to 34-28 early in the third quarter, but a Gator run capped off by a Zoe Solis fast break basket dropped the lead to 39-37. Once again, the Battling Bishops answered with a run of their own as they led by eight, 53-45, entering the final quarter.
Ohio Wesleyan scored the first pair of baskets in the fourth as their lead grew to 63-49. In the waning minutes of the game, the Gators were able to cut the deficit to six, but were unable to come away with the win.
Arbore finished with a game-high 23 points, hitting all ten of her free-throw attempts. Skowron was seven-of-12 from the field as she tallied 14 points. She also grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds to finish with her second double-double of the season. Donovan was also in double figures with 13 points to go with four assists. Soilis had eight rebounds to go with six points while
Kaylah Pinkney had eight rebounds.
For the game, the Gators shot 40.4% from the floor (21-of-52). They owned a 47-35 advantage in rebounds.
Tia Karras led Ohio Wesleyan with 20 points and seven rebounds.
The Gators remain on the road Wednesday (Dec. 5) when they face the College of Wooster in NCAC action.
