HIRAM, Ohio—For the third time in North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) play this season, the Allegheny College men's soccer team went into extra time, but this time the Gators walked away with a 2-1 win against Hiram College Tuesday (Oct. 9).
After some back-and-forth play to start the match, the Gators got on the scoreboard in the 7
th minute. On a free kick from 34-yards out,
Owen Harkins placed a ball perfectly in front of the net to
Liam McKersie, who poked it past the Hiram keeper. The goal marked the fifth of the season foe the senior defender.
Nick Ferreira preserved the lead for the Gators with a save in the 12
th minute.
Neither team registered a shot on goal as the Gators took their 1-0 lead into the break.
Jon Sion nearly pushed the lead to two in the 51
st minute, but his shot from 25-yards out rocketed off the crossbar.
The Terriers earned a penalty kick in the 56
th. Taje Davis was able to convert the opportunity to tie the match at one.
Sion had another scoring opportunity in the 86
th minute, but his shot was turned away.
In the final minute of regulation, Ferreira made a stop on a Hiram header as the game went into overtime.
Just six minutes into overtime, the Gators earned a free kick from about 30-yards out. Like the first Gator goal, Harkins stepped up for the kick, but this time he blasted it into the top left corner as the Gators captured the game 2-1.
Ferreira collected the win in net for the Gators, making three saves.
The Gators are back in action Saturday (Oct. 1) as they travel to Indiana to face DePauw University.
