Gators, Tigers Battle to Scoreless Draw on Senior Day

MEADVILLE, Pa. - The Allegheny women's soccer team picked up its second consecutive tie, battling Wittenberg to a scoreless draw on Senior Day at Frank B. Fuhrer Field.

In a defensive struggle on the crisp fall afternoon, the two teams combined for just 24 shots over 110 minutes of play, with just seven of the 24 attempts finding their way on goal.

Wittenberg had the first real scoring chance of the afternoon, with Gator keeper Maya Hackman saving a long, low shot following a Tiger corner kick in the 13th minute.

Just a minute after Hackman's first save, the Gators countered. Isabella Martinez's shot was blocked in close, before Alex Klare's blast from 15 yards out barely missed the goal, instead clanging off the post.

In the 24th minute, the Tigers were granted a pair of corner kicks, and nearly scored the game's first goal, but a header off of the second corner attempt sailed just over the crossbar.

Over the next 13 minutes, the teams managed just two shots, with Martinez getting saved on a low roller in the 27th minute, and Jordan Mehalko getting her attempt blocked from 15 yards out 11 minutes later.

Following a Wittenberg offsides call with nine minutes left in the half, Martinez sprung teammate Taylor Renk on a long run down the left flank. Renk took it to goal, and sent a centering through ball to the far post toward a streaking Hannah Smith. The pass was unable to connect, however, and the Gators' best scoring chance of the half was thwarted. Moments later, Renk got off a high, arching chip from 10 yards out, but it was gobbled up by Tiger keeper Kelly Corbin.

With just over four minutes left in the half, Amber Lisman narrowly missed giving the Gators the lead when her long blast through traffic off of Allegheny's first corner kick of the match went just wide, and the game would remain scoreless at the intermission.

Each team took six shots and each keeper made two saves over the opening 45 minutes, while Wittenberg had a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.

Seconds after the opening whistle of the second half, Martinez was denied on a hard, left-footed shot from 15 yards out. The Gators came up empty on the resulting corner kick, and neither team would have an extended possession for the next 20 minutes, as the majority of the action over the span took place in the middle third of the field.

In the 64th minute, Hackman made her first save of the second half, as she pounced on a long, bouncing shot through traffic, before Martinez's blast from 20 yards out went wide three minutes later.

Wittenberg would up its offensive pressure as time wound down in the half. The Tigers were granted three corner kicks in a 50-second span in the 78th minute, with the Gator defense blocking a header attempt from the doorstop, and then forcing the shot off the rebound wide.  With two minutes left, Wittenberg was granted yet another corner kick, but Hackman leaped off of her line to snare it before it landed in traffic in front. It would be the final scoring chance for either team in the second frame, and the game would enter its first extra session.

The visitors would again have the bulk of the possession in the first overtime period. With just over 1:30 left in the frame, a header off of a corner kick again went just high, before Hackman produced her biggest save of the game with 30 seconds left in the frame, a leaping stop of a free kick from 20 yards out.  The Tigers would have two more corner kicks over the final 25 seconds of the first OT, but would come up empty to necessitate another 10-minute period.

The pace would slow in a second extra session that featured just one shot and one corner kick, as the teams were forced to settle for the draw.

For the game, Wittenberg finished with a slim 13-11 advantage in shots. Hackman made four saves in goal for Allegheny, while Corbin turned aside three shots for the Tigers.

With the tie, Allegheny's record moves to 6-8-2 overall, and 1-3-2 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. Wittenberg moves to 4-8-3 overall, and 2-2-2 in the NCAC.

The Gators will return to action on Wed. Oct. 24 when they close out their home schedule with a 7:30 p.m. contest against Wooster at Frank B. Fuhrer Field.
