MEADVILLE, Pa.—On a cold and rainy day, the Allegheny College men's soccer team played Wittenberg University to a scoreless draw in North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Saturday (Oct. 20).
Before the match, the Gators honored their seven season players:
Taylor Dias,
Rohan Doherty,
Liam McKersie,
Erik Orta,
Carl Pohlman,
Dan Realbuto and
Jon Sion.
The Gator offense controlled the game early in the first half.
Jon Sion had a shot on goal saved in the fifth minute.
Eddie Opalko followed up with a shot on the rebound, but the shot missed high.
Danny Reid then had a shot saved in the 12
th minute. In the 25
th minute,
Nick Taliani had a shot saved, followed up by a
Matt Massucci shot which was blocked. Minutes later, Opalko had a shot blocked. Massucci followed up with a shot that was saved.
Allegheny continued to pepper Wittenberg with shots throughout the half, owning a 13-2 advantage in the category, but were unable to break through as the game remained scoreless at the half.
The Gator offense continued to pressure the Tiger defense in the second half with shots. Late in the half,
Owen Harkins put a rocket of a shot on net off an indirect kick, but the shot was saved. Gator goalkeeper
Nick Ferreira was able to stymie the only Tiger shot on goal in the half as the game went into extra time.
In regulation, the Gators outshot Wittenberg 18-7, with seven of those shots on net compared to the Tigers' one.
Four minutes into the extra time, Sion flicked a header at the net, but the Wittenberg keeper got in front of the attempt. That proved to be the only scoring opportunity of the 10 minutes as they headed into a second overtime.
Early in the second overtime,
Jorge Olan strong shot on net but was turned away. The Gators earned three corner kicks off the shot, but were unable to take advantage of the opportunity.
After the flurry of corners, the Gators continued to attack the Tiger defense, but were unable to put on in the back of the net as the game ended in a scoreless draw.
For the match, the Gator offense outshot the Tigers 25-9. Of the 25 shots, ten were on target for the Gators. Taliani, Sion and Reid all had a pair of shots on net. Allegheny also owned a 10-2 advantage on corner kicks.
Ferreira made a pair of saves for the clean sheet.
The Gators will now close out the home portion of theoe schedule on Tuesday (Oct. 23) when they host the College of Wooster in NCAC play at 7:30 p.m. at Frank B. Fuhrer Field.
