MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny College men's soccer team picked up a 3-1 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) win over Oberlin College in Meadville Wednesday (Oct. 17).
Nick Taliani had a scoring attempt in the second minute, but the opportunity went wide. Oberlin put a shot on goal in the 19
th minute from the far side of the box, but
Nick Ferreira stepped in front to keep the game scoreless.
After a
Jon Sion pass in the 24
th minute,
Danny Reid dribbled around a defender and curved a shot into the far side under the crossbar to put the Gators on the board. The goal marked the second of the year for the sophomore.
In the 31
st minute, the Yeomen put a shot on net towards the far post, but Ferreira stretched out to make turn the shot away.
The Gators increased their lead in the 37
th minute. On a direct kick, Reid found
Owen Harkins right in front of the net, who poked it in. The goal was Harkins third of the year.
The Yeomen were quick to answer. In the 38
th minute, Michael Candelori put a shot on net which was saved by Ferreira, but Thomas Kanter followed up off the rebound to cut the lead to one.
Early in the second half, the Yeomen earned a direct kick, but Ferreira once again sprawled out to make the save. Sion then had a chance on the other side of the field, but was stifled by the Oberlin goalkeeper. Harkins and Reid had shot shortly after that were also stopped.
The Gators extended their lead in the 85
th minute. On a direct kick from 35-yards out, Harkins hit a rocket of a shot to the upper right corner past the outstretched arms of the Oberlin keeper, making it 3-1.
The Gator defense held off the Yeomen the rest of the match, as they collected the conference win.
Harkins led the Gators with a pair of goals. Reid had three points on a goal and an assist. Sion got on the scoresheet with an assist.
Ferreira picked up the win in net, making five saves.
"It was a great team effort tonight and I was really pleased with our attack," said Head Coach
Angelo Panzetta. "We played with urgency and finished off three solid goals. Oberlin is a very good possession oriented team and I thought we played well defensively and closing space in the final third."
The Gators are back in action Saturday (Oct. 20), as they host Wittenberg University on Senior Day.
